Best Things to Do in Tortola: Your Ultimate Guide to the (BVI) British Virgin Islands

Recently, I attended a wedding in the British Virgin Islands which has never really been on my list but wow am I glad I went. It was so beautiful and the weather was perfect - a great escape from the Chicago cold.

Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands, offering sun, sea, and adventure. Here’s your ultimate guide to the best things to do in Tortola for an unforgettable vacation.

how to get there:

There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Tortola except from Miami so you will most likely have to connect through there. The main airport in Tortola is EIS.

You can fly into San Juan (SJU) and then catch a domestic airline to the island of Tortola. Or you can fly into St. Thomas (STT) and take the ferry to the island. If you take the ferry from St. Thomas, there are 2 ports depending on where you are going. Here is the ferry schedule!

how to get around:

Car Rentals: Renting a vehicle is ideal for exploring the island, but remember they drive on the left side of the road!!

Taxis: Readily available, though prices are fixed and can be relatively high. I recommend finding a taxi guy and keeping his number throughout the duration of your trip.

immigrations and customs:

As the BVI is a British Overseas Territory, U.S. citizens must present a valid passport upon arrival - whether that is at the airport or ferry port. Don’t be alarmed when they charge you an environmental entry fee ($10) and there is a departure fee at the port too.

Let’s go through some of the best things to do while visiting Tortola!

ISLAND HOPPING

I feel like this is the most obvious one - you must go island hopping! Charter a boat or go on a tour. You can stop at Cooper Island Beach Club, Pirates Bight Norman Island, Willy T, and the famous Soggy Dollar Bar.

If anything, you should get a private taxi boat and definitely check out Soggy Dollar Bar for the day!

EXPLORE BATHS AT VIRGIN GORDA

This stunning natural attraction has massive granite boulders that create a maze of tunnels, sea pools, and caves. Visitors can swim, snorkel, and hike through this breathtaking landscape, making it a must-visit spot near Tortola. The Baths' crystal-clear waters and secluded beaches add to the magical experience of this Caribbean wonder.

HIKE SAGE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK

If you’re looking for some outdoor activities on your trip, head to Sage Mountain National Park. This is the highest peak in the Virgin Islands offering amazing views and hiking trails. There is a $3 entrance fee for adults.

GO SNORKLEING

Tortola has some of the best snorkeling the Caribbean has to offer. There are 2 places you need to visit: Smugglers Cove and Brewer’s Bay. Between the 2, Brewer’s Bay is more accessible but you can access both privately or from a chartered boat.

SCUBA DIVE A SHIPWRECK

Scuba dive the RMS Rhone shipwreck off the coast of Tortola. This British mail ship sank in 1867 and is ridden with marine life, including coral reefs, colorful fish, and the occasional sea turtle. You can book on this website.

TOUR CALLWOOD RUM DISTILLERY

Step back in time at Callwood Rum Distillery, one of the Caribbean’s oldest continuously operating distilleries. Take a tour, learn about traditional rum-making, and sample some of the locally produced spirits.

EXPLORE ROAD TOWN & ITS CULTURE

Road Town is the capital of the British Virgin Islands and can offer you a mix of history, culture, and shopping. Visit the J.R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, explore local markets, and sample delicious Caribbean flavors at the town’s restaurants.

This is everything to do while exploring the BVI. It’s a perfect trip if you are looking for a gorgeous beach town and relaxing on boats and beaches.
