The Complete Travel Guide to Mexico

Mexico is such a popular destination - it’s close to the U.S., has a ton of all-inclusive resorts, and is warm year round. Known for its vibrant culture, ancient ruins of Aztecs and Mayans, history and art, it kind of has it all.

LANGUAGE

Spanish is the official language of Mexico, although many indigenous languages such as Nahuatl, Maya, and Zapotec are also spoken in various regions. Many people also speak English here!

CURRENCY

The Mexican peso (MXN) is the official currency. While credit cards are widely accepted in urban areas, it's advisable to carry cash (you can use peso’s or US Dollars) for smaller establishments and markets.

WEATHER

Mexico's climate varies greatly by region. Coastal areas enjoy warm temperatures year-round, while central regions experience cooler weather, particularly in the mountains. So if you are trying to escape the cold, like I usually am, stick to the coastal cities.

WHEN TO GO

Mexico represents a diverse climate, typically more tropical. The best time to visit depends on your destination and preferences. The dry season (November to April) is ideal for exploring most places, while the rainy season (May to October) can bring lush landscapes but occasional downpours. But it’s typically warm no matter the time of year!

WHERE TO STAY

From luxury resorts to quaint boutique hotels to large Airbnb rentals, Mexico offers accommodation options to suit every budget and taste. Popular destinations include Cancun, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Tulum, and Oaxaca.

TRANSPORTATION

Mexico has a well-developed transportation network, including domestic flights, buses, and taxis. For longer distances, comfortable and affordable bus services connect major cities. In urban areas, ride-sharing apps like Uber are widely available. If you are traveling with a big group, you can also set up shuttle transportation. Depending on the hotel you are staying at, they might offer transportation services for you as well. I would recommend setting up transportation or using the transit available in the city.

SAFETY

While Mexico has its share of safety concerns, many of the popular tourist destinations are generally safe for travelers. It's essential to stay informed about local conditions, avoid displaying valuables, and exercise caution, especially at night.

CUISINE

Mexican cuisine is celebrated worldwide - I’m sure we are all familiar. Street tacos, tamales, ceviche, say no more. Don't miss trying regional specialties like Yucatecan cochinita pibil or Oaxacan mole poblano. Also, we can’t forget the tequila!!! Tequila is only produced in Jalisco in Mexico so if you are visiting Puerto Vallarta, you have to do a tequila tasting tour.
