Sorrento in the Summer: What We Ate, What We Did, & Day Trips We Took on our Honeymoon!

Guest Blog Written By: Erin Edwards

My husband and I came here on our honeymoon so Sorrento will always have a special place in my heart, a hidden gem that is easily overlooked but a great place to stay and visit. A short ride from the Naples airport and a boat ride away from some of the top destinations on the Amalfi coast; Capri, Positano, Amalfi, and many more. The ride into Sorrento is breathtaking, the minute you come around the corner, the views speak for themselves. OH, and don’t be alarmed if a massive bus fits where it shouldn’t, and scooters are playing chicken weaving between cars – that’s when you know you’ve made it to Sorrento, well, Italy in general!

START EXPLORING!

Drop your bags and start exploring because the jetlag isn’t going anywhere anytime soon – we stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella, which has a private beach and quite the view of Mount Vesuvius. Although the elevator to the private beach looks terrifying because the hotel basically sits on a cliff. But I can confirm as someone with an elevator fear, I made it out alive. Our hotel offered breakfast with a 360 view of downtown Sorrento and the Bay of Naples, and the breakfast attendant met you with an expresso before you could sit down. The town of Sorrento has a ton to offer, from shopping to restaurants to lemon gardens to water activities, the list of things to do is endless.

WHERE WE ATE:

A must eat at restaurant in Sorrento is Storico8. Storico8 became our family away from family while in Sorrento. It is a small restaurant in a busier than normal alleyway, perfect for people watching and the food is hands down the best we have found in Italy. Be aware, if you order a pizza, it will come out bigger than you. You’ll also think you don’t want dessert, think again because you’ll be talked into their homemade Tiramisu.

Foreigner’s Club for dinner hit the spot, their seafood pasta was delicious! To be honest, we came to this restaurant for the views, not the food but was pleasantly surprised with how well the food matched the views. Try to ask for a spot by the railing, you won’t regret it.

O’Parrucchiano has a lemon garden that is stunning to walk through. When you enter the restaurant, you immediately get a greenhouse feel almost but with a grand staircase. Their gnocchi was to die for but their menu is massive. Thankfully their wait staff has great recommendations if you’re stumped on what to order. A little on the higher end but worth every penny.

We stumbled upon the top panni place, A’Marenna Sorrento Bakery & Bistro. They don’t have a ton of seating, we got lucky and found a spot outside. We happened to walk up right when they opened, and it was packed by the time we left. The number of options for a panni is endless here! We also made a promise to ourselves to get gelato every evening, truly no regrets because there are so many options when it comes to gelato in Sorrento.

WHAT WE DID:

Although it feels like we only ate our way through Sorrento, we loved exploring. We found the coolest cliff to jump off and by we, I mean my husband. I videoed from a far.

Bagni Regina Giovanna is a must do, which is quite the walk from the main road but worth the adventure. It felt like a hot spring, crystal clear water in a little nook with tons of massive rocks to lounge on. There is a beach not too far called Marina Di Puolo where we ate lunch and lounged in our swimsuits.

We never sat still while in Sorrento, they have the cutest little shops and a ton of limoncello everywhere you look. One of the days, we did a family-owned farm tour not too far from Sorrento called La Masseria. We got a tour of the farm, which had lemon trees, olive trees and different animals. The grandma of the family cooked us a meal, with their own olive oil and family recipes. We brought home their olive oil and use it to this day. Highly recommend bringing home olive oil, wine, and limoncello in your check bag. You can thank me later!

DAY TRIPS WE TOOK:

We took multiple day excursions to surrounding areas of Sorrento; we climbed Mount Vesuvius, but only for the refreshments at the top and the views, the tour we were with drops you off halfway up, thank goodness.

We also visited Pompeii, which was incredible to see, truly moving but if you aren’t into history, you can skip.

Capri was breathtaking. We took the ferry over first thing and went directly to Ana-Capri (Ana means up or above) the highest point in Capri. I immediately questioned why we did the chair lift, but once you get to the top, you forget what it took to get there. Capri has the fancy shops, if you are looking to buy something nice to take home out of your budget, this is the place.

Highly recommend taking a boat to Positano and Amalfi, this was a bucket list item for us. Positano was colorful and looks like a computer screensaver. Picturesque town streets to walk along, our favorite was Viale Pasitea, which is Positano’s main street. We wanted to do the Hike of the Gods, everyone claims this is the best view, next time though! We did manage to climb our way to the Eden Sky Bar which was incredible and refreshing after all the stairs it took to get there. Bring comfy shoes, because holy cow, you will feel it!

Amalfi is a vibrant port city with a historic charm. The Amalfi cathedral was stunning, located right in the main town square, we spent the day leisurely walking around sightseeing. We ate lunch at La Piazzetta, it was great. We got one of their specialty pizzas. On our walk back to the boat there was a canoe water polo match happening, very interesting and looked extremely hard.

This trip is one we will never stop talking about or forget. We can’t wait to take our little family to Sorrento one day, until then, I hope you visit and love Sorrento as much as we did! CIAO!

MEET MY GUEST.

Say Ciao to Erin!

Erin is one of my closest friends who I met in Chicago, even though we went to the same college, where I already knew her husband. The world is funny like that. Her and her husband share a love for travel and they always have an adventure on their calendar!

She is the sole reason I stayed in Sorrento when I went to the Amalfi Coast. I leaned on her a lot during the planning stages of this trip so I am ecstatic that she wrote this guest blog because she has some amazing things to say. Besides her adorable family, I think the only thing this girl loves more than Sorrento would be the Buffalo Bills!

In this guest blog, she takes us through their romantic Sorrento two-week honeymoon. Some of their favorite places to eat (Storico8 being one of them, which I ate at twice because it was THAT good), what activities they did, and some of the day trips they took!

Thank you Erin for reminiscing on your trip and for all your amazing recommendations!
