How to Get to the Amalfi Coast - From Rome, Naples, and Salerno

The Amalfi Coast, the stunning coastline that ends up on everyone’s bucket list! Getting to the Amalfi Coast is a little bit tricky and confusing so I’m going to make it super simple for you.

BY AIR

The closest airport is Naples International Airport (NAP). From the Naples airport, you will have several ways to transfer to the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Sorrento, etc.) which we will get into below. The Naples airport is going to be closer to Sorrento as it is more north, if that is where you are making your home base.

In July 2024, they opened a new airport in Salerno called Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport. However, this will be a slow rollout of flights especially if you are flying from the US because you will have to connect. EasyJet is offering direct flights from London Gatwick and Basel. The development will continue all the way until 2043. While this doesn’t seem like the best option yet, it will be one day!

You also have the option to fly into Rome if you would to explore Rome first which I highly recommend - check out some of the best things to do in Rome in case you need some convincing.

PRIVATE TRANSFER

This is by far the most convenient option; however, it’s also the most expensive. This is also the best option if you have a lot of luggage. You can get your own car or you can do a shared shuttle service. I recommend getting to Naples first then taking a private car to your final destination in the Amalfi Coast. You can book one on GetYourGuide, Viator, or Booking.com.

A few things to know beforehand… There will most likely be a lot of traffic, so expect to sit in some deadstop traffic or stop and go. If you get carsick like me, be prepared to feel it on these windy roads.

From Naples, I would avoid weekend mornings and the month of August, if you can. This is will be the highest traffic season!

BY TRAIN

If you are making a stop in Rome before venturing to the Amalfi Coast, you will need to take the train from Rome to Naples then transfer to the Amalfi Coast. There is not a train from Rome to the Amalfi Coast so you will need to get to Naples first. The train is about a 1 hour train ride.

Staying in Sorrento? There is a train from Naples to Sorrento!! I WISH I would’ve known this because I would have taken it - it’s cheaper (around $5), no car sickness, and it’s faster. It’s about a 1 hour train ride from Naples and you can find the schedule here.

If you are staying Positano, there is no train but you could always take the train to Sorrento then the bus or private car to Positano. It’s about a 30-minute ride.

BY BUS

There are several different buses you can take to get to the Amalfi Coast. The bus is a great option if you are traveling on a budget. However, it might not be as ideal if you have a lot of luggage.

From Rome: There is a bus that runs from Rome’s Tiburtina Train Station to Positano. It’s about 5 hours long, costs €10, and leaves at 7 AM and gets there at noon. There is also a bus to Sorrento departing at 7 AM and 3 PM.

From Naples: A bus runs to Sorrento from the Naples airport and takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes and they leave hourly. Tickets costs about €10 for a one-way ticket. To get to Positano by bus, you will have to get to Sorrento first.

BY FERRY

Last but not least, you have the option to take the ferry. You will need to get to the port in each town by public transit or taxi.

From Salerno: There are a few ferry routes that stop in Positano and Amalfi. This route takes about 40 minutes and they depart starting at 9 AM.

From Naples: Ferries are active from April to October with stops in Positano (~2 hours) and Amalfi (2-3 hours).

I think that about covers it! It’s a bit of a journey to actually get to the Amalfi Coast but once you’re there, it’s worth it!
