9 Best Things To Do in Split, Croatia

Split, the jewel of the Dalmatian Coast, a city where history meets modernity. The architecture itself is incredible. Not to mention its stunning coastal views and access to some of the most beautiful islands. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention the amazing food scene here. So here are some of the best things to check out while you are in Split, Croatia.

EXPLORE DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE

AAO IMAGE

No visit to Split is complete without exploring Diocletian's Palace. This ancient Roman palace, built in the 4th century, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the city's historic heart. It’s also a filming spot for Game Of Thrones, most famous for where the dragons were kept in the basement. I saw so many people use this as a congregation spot, they would come here to sit on the steps and drink a cup of coffee or at night to have some wine and listen to live music with friends.

And yes, I took this picture! It was at about 7 AM on a Monday and hardly anyone was up yet.

WALK THE RIVA PROMENADE

The Riva Promenade is the bustling waterfront of Split. It’s lined with everything you need: palm trees, cafes, and bars/restaurants. It’s an ideal spot for a morning coffee, an evening stroll, or what I like to do - drink a glass of wine and indulge in some people-watching. When I was there at the beginning of May, the Feast of St. Domnius was in full swing meaning there was live music, ton of streets vendors set up, and various games and prizes.

GO TO BACVICE BEACH

Bacvice Beach is the most famous beach in Split, known for its sandy shores and shallow waters. It’s a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. There are also some bars lined up along the beach if that’s more your speed.

ISLAND HOP BY BOAT

This is the one thing my schedule did not allow for and that I regret. I wish I would’ve island hopped around to the islands so it’s my #1 recommendation to others. I’m also a sucker for a boat tour but how can you not be? Beautiful waters, open bar, great scenery - it’s the dream. You can book on GetYourGuide or Viator - they usually have a variety of tours and I’ve always had pretty good experience with communication.

TAKE A FOOD TOUR

AAO IMAGE

This will always fall on my list of things to do whenever visiting a new country. It’s the best way to taste all the cuisine and learn about the city. I’ve used Secret Food Tours in the past and have had great experiences. But you can also do a quick search and find the food tour that best fits your needs whether that’s through Viator, GetYourGuide, or a direct website that offers food tours.

The picture above features a Cevapi which is a minced meat sandwich with a roasted red pepper sauce, cheese, lettuce on delicious warm bread. So if you opt out of the food tour at least go to the restaurant pictured (Kantun Paulina who is known for the best Cevapi in Split) and order it with all the toppings. It’s inexpensive and delicious.

ATTEND A SOCCER GAME

AAO IMAGE

Football*, if you will. I did not plan on attending a game but I was on the Riva when I noticed a massive group of people chanting, in jersey’s, drinking beers so I knew some sort of game had to be going on. So I looked up soccer matches and there was one that night. I bought tickets for $10 and went! It was really cool and the crowd was wild! It’s also a short walk from the city about 10-15 minutes so it’s convenient.

VISIT KRKA NATIONAL PARK

Krka National Park is a natural gem in Croatia. This came highly recommended to me but I unfortunately did not have the time. The park features a series of seven waterfalls, with Skradinski Buk being the most famous. This is a great summer activity because you can swim in the waters to cool off. Located about 56 miles from Split, Krka National Park is easily accessible by car or bus or by joining a tour. I’d recommend adding this as a day trip if your schedule allows it.

CLIMB MARJAN HILL

For panoramic views of Split and the Adriatic Sea, hike up Marjan Hill. It’s perfect for a leisurely walk, a bike ride, or a peaceful picnic. I did not do this but it’s a perfect outdoor activity if you’re looking for scenic views or to get those steps in.

EXPLORE OLD TOWN

Old Town is a maze of narrow cobblestone streets, ancient buildings, and hidden courtyards. It’s simply beautiful at every corner you turn. I would often just get a gelato and roam around. Don’t miss the lively Green Market (Pazar), where you can buy fresh produce, local cheeses, and handmade souvenirs.
