8 Best Things To Do in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Adriatic," (or some of you know it as King’s Landing) is a stunning coastal city in Croatia that has such a rich history, breathtaking architecture, and the most beautiful orange and blue contrasting landscapes. Whether you're a history buff, a Game of Thrones fan, or just looking for a beautiful Mediterranean getaway with amazing food, Dubrovnik has something to offer. Here are some of the best things to do in Dubrovnik to make the most of your visit.

  1. WALK THE CITY WALLS

AAO IMAGE

One of the most iconic experiences in Dubrovnik is walking the ancient city walls. These well-preserved walls date back to the 10th century and offer panoramic views at every turn of the city’s landscape. The walk is about 1.2 miles long. It's best to start early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds or you could go at sunset! The ticket is a bit expensive for essentially just walking (just keeping it real) so if you want the historical background, go on a guided tour. But you pay for popularity and this is where you’ll get some of the best views, it’s picture perfect at every turn.

This picture was about halfway through the walk.

2. HAPPY HOUR AT BUZA BAR

This is the bar you have probably seen all over social media. It’s a GREAT spot to meet people if you’re solo traveling as it’s open seating and you might have to ask people for chairs or spots to sit. Enjoy a drink here before dinner, or drink during the day paired with a jump into the sea. It’s a bit tricky to find, it will look like a hole in the wall with no sign so walk through it and when in doubt, follow the people. It’s cash only so make sure you have some beforehand (I did not know this when I showed up and neither did a lot of other people). And yes, you can jump into the sea off the rocks!

3. TAKE A GAME OF THRONES TOUR

Hear me out - it sounds corny but this was one of my favorite parts of the trip: The Game of Thrones Walking Tour. Of course I am a huge Game of Thrones fan but I also loved the tour. It takes you through all of the GOT filming spots and also a great way to get to know the city. I was never bored because our tour guide was hilarious. He even took a little toy dragon out of his backpack and made us take pictures with it on our shoulder. I booked it here through Get Your Guide!

4. RIDE THE CABLE CAR

For the best views of Dubrovnik, take a ride on the Dubrovnik Cable Car and enjoy a panoramic view of the city, the Adriatic Sea, and the nearby islands. It’s a great place to go during sunset. At the top, there is a museum, and several hiking trails if you wanted to explore more.

5. RELAX AT BANJE BEACH

Just outside the city walls is the beach! Banje Beach is the most popular one and it’s a great spot to do so if you feel like you need a day to relax. Since I visited end of April, it wasn’t quite hot enough to lay out by the sea but this is where I would go if it’s summer.

6. INDULGE IN THE NIGHTLIFE

Dubrovnik at night is absolutely gorgeous. I seriously felt like I was transported back to the Medieval Times every night. I liked to sit in one of the bars on Stradun and have a cocktail at night. My favorite was Stradoon, they make great cocktails. The Irish Pub is also right off the main strip in the alley (follow the loud crowd and it will lead you there) and is a popular spot to meet people from all over the world. I also loved D’Vino Wine Bar if you want to do more of a nightly wine tasting. This is more of a bar city over a club city but if a club is what you are looking for, Revelin is the place for you.

7. LOKRUM ISLAND

A short ferry ride away, this island is great for an escape from the city. Ferry’s run every day and it’s only a 10 min ride. There are a few different things you can do: float in the Dead Sea, relax at the beach, explore the Monastery, visit the botanical gardens, and see the Game of Thrones Iron Throne. While I did not personally do this, I think I would add it to the list for the next visit.

8. TAKE A DAY TRIP

There are a few different day trips you can take from Dubrovnik. Unfortunately, I did not get to do this but I know people who did and they loved it!

  • Kotor, Montenegro: You can day trip to Montenegro. This tour will provide transportation for you with the option to take a boat ride to Our Lady of the Rocks. The food and the views are supposed to be incredible so Montenegro has definitely been on my list since I have heard great reviews.

  • Mostar, Bosnia: You can also day trip to Bosnia and visit the Kravica Waterfalls. Again, this tour will provide you with transportation and you get to experience some of the history of Mostar and wonders Bosnia has to offer. Not to mention, you can try some of their native cuisine.

These are just a few of the main attractions you can in Dubrovnik - many of which I either went to or wanted to do! If you go and do any of these activities, please tag me in your Instagram and give me your review - I want to hear your experience :)
